The new live-work space for the celebrated American artist is located in the the Historic District of Clinton Hill in Brooklyn, NY. The project scope involves the conversion of two adjoining two story carriage houses into one structure and a third level addition, resulting in 5,600 sq.ft. of occupiable space. It is well situated in a neighborhood with a flourishing creative class with a growing number of properties of a similar typology.
This project acknowledges the intertwined nature of an artist’s domestic and studio life, and brings those spheres of activity closer together. Although located within the same structure, there is a clear division between the private residence and studio which is expressed by the presence of separate entrances. The studio is conveniently located on the ground level, which allows for smooth transport of artwork, supplies and the coming and going of staff. The private residence occupies the remaining levels with the common areas facing the street, the sleeping quarters facing the rear yard, and a terrace tucked away from street view. In constrast with utilitarian studio space, the private residence has an array of materials from various colors of finished woods, rough poured in place concrete, stainless steel, mirror, and luxurious textiles.
