Market “UP” is located in the former industrial heart of Johannesburg and a product of the resurgence of activity and investment in the city center. Moreover, it is part of a wave of new development that is concentrated in the expanding arts district known as the Maboneng Precinct. The project is a mixed-use redevelopment consisting of retail, office / commercial, and residential uses. The scope of work also involved urban and landscape design of the surrounding area.
The project is separated into two sequential phases. The first phase which was completed last fall consist of the conversion of an industrial warehouse into a facility retail space facing the main road, and small office spaces and artist workshops facing the shared courtyard in the rear. The second phase consists of converting sawtooth shaped 7-Up bottling factory into two residential loft buildings with 118 units linked by an interior courtyard. The emergence of these structures signify a broader relationship between Johannesburg and other global cities experiences a surge in urban growth.
As the project manager I was responsible for leading a 3 person team on a 13,000 sq.m. mixed use redevelopment complex with a budget of approx. $5,500,000 in downtown Johannesburg, South Africa. One notable feature we developed is the prefabricated exterior panel system made out of polystyrene that was finished with locally sourced recycled glass aggregate by a local artisan. This design solution came out of a process of collaboration and experimentation, and gives the district a distinct aesthetic quality that sets it apart from the rest of the city.
